cloverI recently heard about a study that was done where researchers asked people if they were lucky or not and then put them to a task.

Those that said they were lucky were much more likely to see the hint in the task that made the task simple and fast.

Those that said they were not lucky were more likely to painstakingly follow the directions of the task without seeing the shortcut.

heart_manIt is very important to maintain positive emotions and happy feelings as much as possible. To do that you must become more aware of how you are feeling and have ammo handy to lift yourself up when you are down.

Create habits of thinking where you catch yourself feeling unhappy then say to yourself, “Things are as they are and feeling down doesn’t help me. I am so happy I can catch myself feeling down and remind myself to pump it up!” Then proceed to talk yourself up to a happier feeling or visualize yourself up to a happier feeling. Most importantly, allow yourself to feel better knowing that goodness is coming your way and you are ready for it.

A “happiness collection” is helpful too. Consider it your scrapbook of happy things which may be an actual book or which can be virtual…whatever works for you. Gather your favorite music, poems, song lyrics, pictures, and videos. Write out or speak reminders of your happiest memories and visualizations of good things to come. If you notice you are feeling down, go to your “happiness collection” and pump yourself up a notch or two.

Do your best to change your thinking so that you can feel good to great most of the time. Use your imagination to visualize things that make you feel better. Flip though your happiness collection for reminders to be positive. Generate positive feelings and raise your vibration.

I have met folks on my journey who live in a state of profound resistance and burnout day after day after day. I would not wish that on anyone BUT I have found that this type of extreme mental pain is part of an evolving process. Often these people are ignoring their passion, what they really want to do for their work for reasons they may not be able to verbalize yet.

happy pizza delivery guyHere is a short careerillionaire story. It is a beautiful demonstration of something I’ve been thinking about.

You see, no matter what your work is each day you are in charge of your attitude. If you spend time resisting what you chose to do (i.e. working in order to feed yourself and your family) then you are spending a lot of energy resisting something you have decided to do. What a waste! Since you have decided to do it anyway, why not be fully present in the moment and engaged in your work cheerfully?

As demonstrated in the fast food workers’ story that I linked to above, it is when working while fully engaged in the present moment and with a positive attitude that you profoundly affect the people around you. Not only that, but you also greatly help your own cause. People love to be around such a positive, carefree personality so your networking becomes easy and natural. You begin to allow creativity and intuition to work through you. And, most importantly of all…you just generally become a force for Good!

I have been thinking about the money flow difference between coaching and mentoring and it has been good food for thought. Surely mentors get some other sort of compensation for their contributions (rather than the green stuff), maybe not from the person who sought out their expertise but from somewhere else. Or, maybe they do get something besides money from their mentees. They might receive stimulation for their own development and/or creativity; or they might simply get another set of ears to hear them speak about their passion which may feed their energy and motivation. That could be worth more than money because of the richness of the experience.

It is better to focus on your strengths and be aware of your weaknesses from the standpoint of having a high quality of life. It is stressful to work exhaustively on improving weaknesses and furthermore it doesn’t honor your strengths or the strengths of those around you. It is okay that someone else is better at something than you. Respect them for their gifts while honoring yourself for yours too.

Most likely, you will learn about or create lots of other opportunities while going through the exercise of recognizing your strengths. Possibilities for career changes or enhancement will emerge that you never imagined.

Essentially a personal mission statement is about your big picture purpose in life. In 50 words or less, mission statements are concise guiding principles that you can refer to again and again to remind you of why you are doing what you are doing.

The mission statement touches on the idea of life’s purpose and why we are here. Most of us at one time or another have wondered along this train of thought, right? We feel we must be here for a reason, a higher purpose if you will.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could bring in money and be working on our purpose in life at the same time? You have probably seen people or known people who have found their mission in life. They are passionate about and proud of the work they do and seem to exude a special type of energy or joy.

Mission statements will evolve as you go through the stages of your life. In fact, it is interesting to save old mission statements as a record of how you have changed over the years. Maybe your mission statement will be essentially the same and only become better defined and distinguished. Or, maybe your mission statement will change dramatically. Either way is perfectly fine.

Careerillionaire – I made it up…actually, my husband did. I was trying to think of something clever for another website concept so I ask him & he just threw careerillionaire right out there without skipping a beat. It was perfect for what I was writing at the time and since then I have been working on a definition. So here is the first draft. A careerillionaire is someone who is in a groove where work easily brings a sense of fulfillment along with an equally satisfying paycheck. They feel like they have hit the lottery because they get to do what they love for a living.
